BRIEF BACKGROUND SUMMARY: When Barbara Gordon was younger she spent her time coming up with different superheroes amongst her friends, mostly to escape from the reality that her mother had just died and her father was grieving. Though both father and daughter would eventually make their way through the death of her mother, Barbara's active imagination continued into her adolescence. She'd always been an active young girl and was involved in a good deal of a extra curriculars. With her superhero fascination she took to gymnastics and martial arts quite well, though she wasn't nearly at the level that she would eventually advance to.

Her minor obsession truly manifested when she designed a costume modeled off of that of The Batman's for the GCPD masquerade ball she and her father were set to attend. The evening was successful and proceeded without interruption until the villain, Killer Moth, intervened with an attack on the guest of honor, Bruce Wayne. Barbara decided then that obviously it was the right time to make her debut into the superhero business. At sixteen she leapt into action, using years of dance, gymnastics, and defense classes to her advantage. Being completely inexperienced with this sort of combat, she nearly met death but her action had created enough of a distraction for Bruce to sneak away and return as Batman. He returned, saved her, saved the day, and then, outside of the ballroom, the two met for the very first time.

The two did not get on very well at first, and Batman wanted nothing to do with her training. He already had a sidekick, was his excuse, and he didn't need another one. He also simply didn't want to put another life in danger. She was a persistent little thing though, and it was only because of her persistence in following both Batman and Robin on their patrols and her subsequent friendship with Dick that Batman eventually agreed to begin training her. She showed potential, though she had the propensity for getting hurt on these patrols at first, given that her training was lacking. As her training progressed, she became relatively adept at balancing the double life. It became easier once she entered college, a place where her father couldn't consistently look over her shoulder and wonder where she was at all hours of the night.

After graduating with her degree in computer sciences, Babs' first real job was as a research assistant at the main branch of the Gotham Public Library. She also continued to work alongside Batman and Robin, continuing her nightly activities along with trying to live a normal life. She really wasn't sure what she wanted to do with her life but she figured the job was a good place to start.

Though her life was going along rather well, that would soon change. It wasn't her connection to the Batgirl alter ego or that fact that she knew who Batman was that made her a target in the Joker's eyes. It was simply the fact that she was an easy connection to her father, Commissioner Gordon. With this discovery, Barbara's life as Batgirl came to a sudden halt. The Joker knocked on Barbara's door one evening and shot her twice, point blank, straight through her spinal cord. The attack left her paralyzed from the waist down and ended a good deal more than her life as a vigilante. She was forced to leave her job at the library in order to recover even after she was able to move around again, but once she was situated enough to go back, she decided against it.

Understandably, the Joker's attack left her depressed, feeling vulnerable, and slightly useless in terms of her place in the world now, compared to what it had been. Her behaviour for awhile was very out of character of her former self. She was quiet and withdrawn, preferring the company of her computer to the people surrounding her. It took awhile for her to become used to her new life and she didn't immediately take to people seeing her in the chair. It was a combination or Bruce and her father who finally convinced her to rejoin the world of the living. Barbara eventually realized that she'd been acting like a shadow of her former self and over time she formed the Birds of Prey, began helping Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and the rest, using her superior computer knowledge in gathering research and coordinating an entire system of communication and computer networks to keep the heroes of Gotham connected. By word of mouth and reputation, word of her abilities and what she did spread throughout the superhero community and thus the network grew. She chose the alias Oracle and slowly became the official/unofficial research guru for many of the major superheroes in the United States. Few know her real identity, which she guards with her life, and as far as the general public knows, Barbara Gordon was shot in the back by a robber one night.

Barbara enters the came post-Oracle: Mini, meaning that she's from the most current Batman run. Bruce is dead, Gotham's in shambles, and after adventures with the Calculator, she's hiding one very large secret from everyone.
